Localized heat does some weird things to steel sometimes. Does anyone have feedback on Mitchell's Mausers in Fountain Valley, CA They are currently advertising a gorgious K98-M48 Series 8mm Rifle for 249. Either that or bluing may take to welded metal differently than non welded metal. The weld would be basically new steel and probably wouldn’t look/blend right and may be detectable through bluing. All steel is porous and older steel has had years to absorb minute amounts of dirt/oil/grime.

You might be able to machine it round again but you can still tell where the welds were. I don’t think bluing would do a real good job hiding if something was welded or not. Looks like it was either parkerized black or powder coated. Shouldn’t be glare from the finish though. Ever so slightly mind you but it’s there. The edge of the receiver just before the opening looks rough, uneven. It looks just a little uneven in some spots, around the giant asterisk and just underneath the year stamp. The receiver, especially the front, looks like it may have been grounded to remove the markings, built up with weld and then either machined or ground round again. And while there has been some very obvious refinishing going on, I do think the receivers need closer scrutiny. Usually pre war Mausers that have been cared for have very nicely machined cuts, nice rounded edges and so forth. But as a welder who works with metal all the time, something bothers me about that receiver. That project is fun and a worthy pursuit. Some people are on the fence about Mitchell’s Mausers, and some are skeptical as to whether or not the markings are fake. And if you simply cannot stand those, make it a tiny bit better by trading your parts with those on your friends' RC k98s to get the Waffenamt markings at least matching with respect to their factory of origin.

If you need a shooter k98, but one that has intact Waffenamts from any of the many other sellers for $230.00-$300.00, clean out the cosmolene, strip off the crappy Russian varnish are reoil it with boiled linseed oil, and enjoy the heck out of the rifle despite the mistmatched serial numbers. Not sicked enough yet? Try this: They take rare Luger pistols and give them the same clean, grind, and restamp treatment as the low cost Russian Captured k98's, and sell them for hundreds more than the $900 they are now worth. They are conterfeit guns, sold by a company that has one of the most attractive website and magazine ad out there, touting a certificate of authenticity that is pure BS. Mitchell's ads call these firearms "collector grade" when every ounce of what made the firearm collectable has been ground away and defaced. The bolt shroud is ground down almost 1/16" on top and restamped, so that's a dead giveaway. You can SEE a Mitchell's Mauser k98 from over 30' a way at any gunshow. Their cleaned up remarked k98's also go for ridiculous prices.

Mitchells sells the SAME rifle in cleaned up (presumeably fired) condition for over $400.00. I bought a M48A UNFIRED at a gunshow for $150.00 last year. They do not convert M48 Yugo Mausers into k98's but they sell unissued and reconditioned M48's for ridiculous prices. They take RC k98's, force match all the parts, and polish and reblue the parts, except for the bolts, which they mistakenly believe should remain in the white.
